ProFusion: from the University of Kansas, many consider this the most "intelligent" of the meta engines; home users should check out the free personalized results option
The Big Hub: the outstanding feature of this site is an excellent  list of search engines classified by subject; also performs mega searches for up to 9 engines
Dogpile: an unfortunate name for such a powerful tool; search up to 23 Web, Usenet & FTP search indexes with one command
MetaCrawler: search 9 indexes at once
SavvySearch: search 20+ indexes at once
MetaFinder ZDNet Virtual Labs: search 5 name engines simultaneously for e-mail addresses

Single Index Engines

Alta Vista: indexes web pages & text; includes Usenet newsgroups; images search is a key feature, select images from main menu, enter keywords and thumbnails linking to original site will be returned
ARThur: searches 300 Web sites containing 30,000 images and associated text
Google: fast and relevant; searches entire pages, not just titles
HotBot: indexes web pages & text; includes Usenet newsgroups
Infoseek: indexes web pages & text; also contains browsable subject index
USgovsearch: research government information from millions of government Web pages; free to public libraries from Northern Light

Subject Catalogs: directories organized by subject

 

Chester Library Info Links: short annotations of sites recommended by our own staff & library patrons; searchable; includes many "gateway sites"
eBLAST : Encyclopędia Britannica's Internet Guide: sites are annotated and rated; option to search only eBLAST or include Alta Vista; includes featured site of the day and week and "celebrity bookmarks," favorites of famous people
Yahoo: short annotations; notification of new entries; hint - use search to locate your category
Magellan: some annotations; all sites rated; searchable
